The makers of a TV advert featuring United star Javier ‘Chicharito’ Hernandez were counting on the city’s reputation for wet weather. Instead, it was left to a man with a spray gun to replicate the Manchester weather when blue skies stretched out above the airport yesterday.
The unusually bright weather threatened to spoil filming of Coke Zero commercial and the crew had to take matters into their own hands.
Regardless of the weather, the Mexican hitman, nicknamed Little Pea, caused a stir while filming scenes in Terminal Two.
Dozens of holidaymakers looked on while he walked through the arrivals hall – flanked by a 40-strong crew – with some airport staff even stopping to catch a glimpse of the action.
The filming schedule was so tight – and Chicharito’s time so precious – that producers even hired a body double for the 22-year-old.
The footballer was seen laughing and joking between takes with the crew and seemed to be at ease in front of the cameras.
An airport source said: “Lots of people did stop and stare because it’s not every day that you see a Premier League footballer filming an advert at the airport.
“There was a lot of activity and plenty of extras were involved in the filming but the main attraction was Chicharito. He spent most of the day here and there was a real buzz about the place.” Hernandez was whisked to the airport after filming scenes earlier in the day at Broughton Park rugby ground.
Other locations at the airport included the skylink – which connects Terminals One and Two – and the car park.
He was seen pushing his luggage – and was supposed to be arriving back in the country after a trip abroad. It is thought the advert will air across the world, including his home country Mexico, later in the year.
